One of the  more interesting studies released recently illustrated the connections between violent crime rates and environmental stewardship.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal, Environmental Research, the study reports a "very strong association" over more than 50 years between the exposure of young children to the toxic metal lead, and crime rates 20 years later when they are young adults. More here.

Saturday's word, No New Coal

by: Rick

Sat Sep 08, 2007 at 11:04:29 AM PDT

The best thing on the net today might be A Siegels' piece on No new Coal over at Daily Kos. A moratorium against new coal power generation plants would be one of the most important steps we could make in the foreseeable future. Check it out.

Friday's truth - not at all convenient

by: Rick

Fri Sep 07, 2007 at 02:35:17 AM PDT

The environmental impact of the livestock industry (or the purchasers and consumers of meat, depending on how you want to see it) is thoughtfully and bluntly discussed in this realistic piece at HuffPost. Countless studies show time and again that we all need to dramatically cut back or eliminate our consumption of beef and other meats.

something to read today

by: Rick

Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 10:40:59 AM PDT

Perhaps the most important thing a person could read today is this little ditty about just how fast climate change is coming.

In North America, our federal governments are still doing nothing significant about it.  What do the conservatives think they are conserving?

Make the Right Choice the Easy Choice!

by: a siegel

Wed Aug 08, 2007 at 05:34:52 AM PDT

(Thank you. And excellent conceptual illustration, of a wrong and a solution. - promoted by Rick)

Make the Right Choice the Easy Choice is one of Energize America's core principles.  When it comes to energy, all too often, there are bureaucratic, financial, and other factors that inhibit the right choice being the easy choice for government, businesses, and individuals.

Sadly, this is not limited to energy issues.

Just today, listening to NPR, I learned that there is a twist to agricultural insurance that serves as a barrier to good, sustainable, organic agricultural practices.

Are you using phony sunscreens?

by: Rick

Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 17:50:30 PM PDT

It's summer! Enjoy it! And when you are grabbing your sunscreen, know whether the one you use is a scam or an effective protection. It's easy :

In a new investigation of 785 name-brand sunscreens, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found widespread evidence that many products on the market are not safe and effective.../ We have also identified 130 products that offer very good sun protection with ingredients that present minimal health risks to users. Find out which in our best and worst lists.

What can you do? Great things.

by: Rick

Fri Jul 13, 2007 at 11:47:58 AM PDT

Along with other national and global challenges, our environmental problems are increasingly critical. Perhaps the priority should be getting politicians into power that recognize we need policies with people's interests in mind - not more myopic profiteering for transnational corporations. Meanwhile, know that there are housands of very positives things we could do together. For one example, check out this brief video; (over>)

china pollutes north american breast milk

by: Rick

Tue Jul 10, 2007 at 11:36:14 AM PDT

It's always seemed and been obvious to those who think about it, but understandably, most people don't think about it often.

Lax environmental standards and or enforcement in China are effectively working environmental standards here, in as much as we import huge portions of our diet and products from that country. Since the government of China recently admitted that pollution is killing 750,000 or more people there every year, perhaps we should take a closer look at what that means right here.  More over>

live earth - a fine success

by: Rick

Mon Jul 09, 2007 at 09:04:10 AM PDT

Live Earth's stated goal of raising awareness was accomplished in a massive way on the weekend. And as the concert wrapped up, Al Gore asked the audience to "Put all of this energy into helping solve the climate crisis."   Mainstream media articles noted that over 2 billion people watched - or certainly were aware - so if a significant portion of those people make even a little effort - the results will be profound.

NY Times today, an overview,

by: Rick

Sun Jul 01, 2007 at 11:12:04 AM PDT

Leading up to Live Earth, Al Gore is rightfully in the news a lot these days. Today, he has an op-ed in the New York Times that summarizes the environmentally-progressive movement's message very clearly. Check it out here.

Pesticides - The Global Poison

by: Rick

Fri Jun 22, 2007 at 13:32:18 PM PDT

Exposures to pesticides are now linked to twice the rates of brain cancers in occupationally high-exposure groups than in those with lower exposure levels. In the study, there is evidence that people who just treated their houseplants with pesticides also had a higher brain cancer risk. More>

ON DOING THE RIGHT THING:
For "reminding Americans what courage and values are all about," Time Magazine named three brave WhistleBlowers as Time's 'Persons of the Year' for 2003.

So go ahead - expose corporate or government recklessness or excessive pollution. It's the right thing to do.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket            The thinking behind the GREEN WHISTLE campaign is the suggestion that: 'Whistleblowing' is about doing the right thing! Time Magazine ( as above) would agree. And we need all Americans to be that courageous and insist that their organizations and governments do the right thing for the environment, for health, for justice. Much of the damage that is being done is hidden as well as unnecessary. We need to change a lot of things rapidly - expose wrongs - to your local or national newspaper and/or a relevant organization; Environmental Working Group? National Resources Defense Council? Or here at Organic American. Write it here or send it to us. Do the right thing - make a huge difference. If you see a wrong - let's make it right.
